Internal Objects: Slippy Clay Pull (1), Artist’s Hand, Inner Balance, Kubrick Bone, Rib Loaf, Head in Clay, Self in Skull. (2025)
The audience is invited to interrogate the sculpture Clay Consciousness to encounter what is lodged within.
Slippy Clay Pull (1) - A gold handle invites interaction with the creative imagination and the plasticity of mind.
Inner Balance - The cochlea and semi-circular canals suggest the strange, ethereal, three-way balance between the external world, the self, and the spiritual.
Head in Clay - Shifting identity, hidden beauty, precious sleep...
Kubrick Bone - Referencing scene one 'The Dawn of Man' from Stanley Kubrick's cult classic film 2001 A Space Odyssey (1968) where the sacred and destructive power of technological evolution from primal to sci-fi is embedded in the transition from elephant bone to space-ship. In Clay Consciousness the bone is embedded within the elephantine sculpture which represents the mind-body's ability to transport our consciousness to other worlds.
Rib Loaf - A subconscious archetypal riddle.
(Not Shown:
The Hand of Truth (Artist's hand) - A kitsch Bocca della Verita embedded within Clay consciousness, reflects the participant's relationship to self and others - seen variously as a helping hand, a grabbing hand, the hand of friendship, helplessness or rescue.
Self in Skull. - A miniature skull resembling that of a chimp, containing a negative shape, a void in the form of a crouching figure. )
All items embedded within Clay Consciousness are modelled in clay, glazed and fired to Stoneware temperature.
