Clay Consciousness - participatory sculpture.
Clay Consciousness (2025) Installation Views Copeland Gallery, London and Edward James Studios, West Dean, West Sussex.
Clay Consciousness is a 5ft x 3ft participatory sculpture; its sensuous curves evoke the body, its shape, an elephantine skull; its patina, veins under the skin. Its surface is punctuated by seven Boolean voids, each containing a ceramic sculpture: Slippy Clay Pull, Artist’s Hand, Inner Balance, Kubrick Bone, Rib Loaf, Head in Clay, Self in Skull.
Paper Scores are provided to encourage audience participation with the sculpture through a series of playful instructions. Thus 1:1 encounters with Clay Consciousness are facilitated through dream, memory, or psychoactive awakenings, linking artist-artwork-and audience.
Clay Consciousness is constructed from a novel combination of lightweight materials: chicken wire, expanding foam, whipped aerated filler, and air-drying clay.
